WHY do Employers Require Experience?

WHY do Employers Require Experience?

WHY do Employers generally REQUIRE a minimum of 3-5 YEARS or more EXPERIENCE for Medical Coders??

Some SPECIALTY CODERS  (Transplant Surgery, Trauma, Cardio, Hem/Onc, etc,) may well be required to have even 6-8 years of Experience!

AND…most employers, facilities, clients want RECENT EXPERIENCE!!! (what you knew well and practiced 10 years ago — even 3 years ago, probably IS NOT RELEVANT in 2018! Things (rules/regs) CHANGE so frequently in this industry!

……………………..

1) A good, experienced medical coder can bring in significant amounts of unrealized revenue to a practice.

2) EXPERIENCED Medical Coders know things and how to effectively utilize things like:

A) MUE’s
B) NCCI Edits
C) LCD’s/NCD’s
D) Denial Edits
E) Payor Policies
F) CMS MedLearn Policies/Manuals
G) Appeals
H) ERISA
I) GUIDELINES
J) Authoritative Reference (what qualifies as such)
K) MIPS
L) and multiple OTHER THINGS

3) Coders/Billers hold the Physician/Provider’s Livelihood and even their License in their hands. Many Physicians/Providers have realized, TOO LATE, that they were in Deep Water due to things their Coder/Biller SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, but , in retrospect, clearly did not.
