AAPC —  Nationally recognized organization providing Education, Support and Credentials to Medical Coding professionals of many specialties.  (www.aapc.com)

AHIMA – Nationally  recognized organization providing Education, Support and Credentials to Health Information Management (HIM) professionals throughout many disciplines.  (www.ahima.org)

BOARD CERTIFICATION is the process by which a physician or other professional in the United States demonstrates a mastery of basic knowledge and skills through written, practical, or simulator-based testing. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Board_certification)

CERTIFICATE –  a document presented at the end of many training programs; i.e., a Certificate of Completion.  Some University Programs provide Certificate Programs along with their Degree Programs.

CERTIFICATION/CREDENTIAL —  two different terms frequently used interchangeably.  A Certification or a Credential indicates that an individual has successfully challenged a rigorous written Examination  demonstrating mastery of the Subject Matter in question.  EX:  A Certified or a Credentialed Coder.

LICENSURE  means a restricted practice or a restriction on the use of an occupational title, requiring a license.   (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Licensure)

OFF-SHORING – the practice of hiring businesses in ‘foreign countries’ to take over operations/management of a specific function(s) within a company or business; frequently with the intent to ‘save money’ or facilitate ‘turn-around time’.  Generally, the original country’s laws/regulations are unenforceable once the work leaves the confines of that country’s borders.

OUT-SOURCING —   the practice of hiring ‘contractors’ to help with work-flow issues, perhaps due to illness, or vacations, or in the event of ‘work back-logs’.
